When he was a young boy he was blinded by an accident when a knifeslipped and pierced his eyeball. He was sent to a state school for theblind and there recieved his education. He was trained in music and wasa skilled pianst as well as mastering other instruments. He taught music ina school for young women where he met his wife who was a student at theschool. He composed religious music as well as other types. Bits of hiscompositions are still played in the Eastern Star ritual. His wife Calphurniawas a skilled musician too and all 6 of thier children recieved musicaltraining. They had a family orchestra which gave concerts around thecountryside. One of these programs lists the children and thierinstruments and at the bottom states, "We all sing" which became a familyjoke.
