Show Details Shared Note: - from the HISTORY OF BUCHANAN COUNTY, IOWA, YR 1881: Samuel Postel wasborn in Guernsey county, Ohio, on Feb. 7, 1825. When about nineteenyears old he removed with his parents to Tuscarawas county. In October,1848, he came to Buchanan Co., spent the winter and then removed to OtterCreek, Linn county, where he remained for three years. He then came toLiberty Township, and bought the farm of eighty acres on which he nowlives. Since then he has added to his land until he now has a farm ofthree hundred acres-two hundred being under cultivation. He works thislarge tract as a stock farm, endeavoring to feed all the grain he canraise. Out of the wilderness of thirty years ago, he has made a finefarm, a good home, and his house is surrounded by barns, numerousoutbuildings, and a good orchard. On the seventh day of September, 1847,he was married to Isabella Barr, of Tuscarawas county, Ohio, by whom hehas nine children: Isaac, born May 29, 1849, died March 23, 1851, Mary,born Septer 18, 1851: John, born May 5, 1853: Allen, born April 5, 1855:James, born April 24, 1857: Sarah , born May 6, 1859: Elijah, born July6, 1861; Ralgh, born June 11, 1863; and Edward, born, Nov. 9, 1867. Inpolitics, he was born and raised a Democrat. Mr. Postel is one of theoldest settlers of the county, quiet, unassuming, and highly esteemed.

acres which the family now occupies.
At the time of his death, his landed another article said:

Mr. Postel and wife have had nine child-
ren, all living we beleive. Mr. Postel was
an excellent man in all the relations of
life, and a good citizen. Samuel bought land from Isabelle's parents,
The funeral occured from the house,Robert and Elizabeth Barr
Thursday, and the remains were laid
to rest at the Miller Cemetery

SUDDEN DEATH OF SAMUEL POSTEL
The report was circulated yesterday that Samuel Postel, an old settlerof Liberty Twp., was dead. many of his old friends could hardly believethat there was not some mistake as Mr. Postel was in the city a few daysago. He died at his home near Pine Creek on Tuesday, at four o'clock p.m. after an illness of but a few days, of throat trouble. Whether or notit was a case of diptheria does not seem to be determined.
Samuel Postel was 64 years old. He was born in Guernsey Co., OH Feb.7, 1825. In 1848, he came to Buchanan Co., and after remaining onewinter, removed to Otter Creek, Linn County, where he remained for threeyears, when he returned to Buchanan Co. and located at Liberty Twp. wherehe bought a farm of 80 acres, which he kept in his possesion until thetime of his death, adding some two hundred acres in the meantime. Out ofthe wilderness of 40 years ago, he has made a fine farm and a good home.On the 7th day of Sept., 1847, he was married to Isabelle Barr, whosurvives him, by whom nine children were born to him. He was one of theoldest settlers of Buchanan County, was a quiet , unassuming and highlyesteemed citizen. The funeral occured this morning at 11 o'clock, thefuneral cortege going from the house to the Postel church, where theservices were held.
It is reported that three other members of the family are sufferingfrom the same disease.


Samuel died without a will. R. F. Postel filed a petition to have ThomasJ. Utterback administer Samuel's estate. Paper values Samuel's personalproperty to be about $1,000. Survivors include: Isabelle, MaryUtterback, John, Allen, James, Sarah, Elijah, R. F. ‎(Ralph)‎, and Edward.
